Low speed and high cost
Written by Zhuge Liang from Hong Kong on 12/7/2000

I joined AOL 3 years ago in England. When I access AOL in Hong Kong and in other parts of the world, the connection speed is slow and the set up procedure is very complicated, not to mention the very high roaming surcharge. Also the content provided in HK is simply a poor duplication of their US partner's. |

Bad Service!

I would like to share my experience here. I have been using AOL for 2 months, the service is probably one of the worst compare to a local ISP. Cancellation is always being ignored, busy signal during peak hour, etc. In comparison their Web site content with others (e.g. CTI, HKnet, Netvigator), most of the contents are copy cats and graphic design looks made by amateurs. |

US model doesn't work here!

Shouldn't AOL realize now that their US directly marketing strategy doesn't work here in Hong Kong. Besides, the locally well established ISPs are too strong to compete. A good suggestion would be buy out all their competitors, but it's not possible for AOL because their stock dropped over 60% during past few months. |

Waste of resources

I don't like AOL's massive promotion strategy, they always put useless CD-ROM in my mail box and personally speaking I think these are junk mail. In fact, AOL came too late, there are already strong brand and competitors such as Netvigator, HKnet. They might stand a chance if they acquire of the major players in Hong Kong. Well, AOL got the money! |

Not as good as localized portals

AOL may be the biggest ICP in the world, but when it comes to Hong Kong, it does not even enter into the Top 10 ICP. In my own opinion, I think the main reason for this is because AOL HK tried to bring the American style content and hope people will adapt just like in the state. Well, after a year, it proved they are wrong, both their Web site and free CD promotion. |
