Comment Larry Campbell's reaction to laid off. * 1/2 * o o o
Written by Jennice from Hong Kong on 8/20/2000
"Campbell's gripes about management, which he dwelled upon, culminated at the end of his talk in an unspoken gesture concerning the scmp.com debacle. Delving into a bag, he produced a carved wooden hand with the middle finger extended. It had been given to him by a friend the first time he left the Post. But, he said, it would have been more appropriate to have received it from scmp.com's management the second time around. Not a golden handshake, but a wooden finger."
Comment SCMP is loaded * * * 1/2 * o
Written by Simpson from Hong Kong on 8/13/2000
SCMP is loaded, but they're not pouring any money into online content development. Those guys are late to the game and among the first to get out. remember how their classified ads business was under severe attack before those suckers respond to it. If they're more proactive, jobs DB wouldn't grow to what it is today!

Lots of politics behind the lay-offs. Only the old, useless and powerful are left in the management. The young, enthusiastic and clued-in sacked.
Comment IPO soon? Nope... * 1/2 * o o o
Written by Miffy from Hong Kong on 8/12/2000
i bet you are reading the hong kong economic journal front page... about the list of dot com not going to ipo. like scmp.com, show8 follow suit by firing people, but of course they use the lame excuse "replacing underperformance staff" (quoting Frank Ng). Guess the only way out for them is to seek private investor instead... wish them luck.
Comment PCCW wants SCMP * * * o o

I heard recently that PCCW has twice offered to buy the South China Morning Post and was twice refused, but that a third offer could be accepted.
