Seemed TOM.COM has spent 40% of its existing cash and went out for shopping, but I do not see any highly revenue ones among its purchased media companies. Seemed it's a way to transfer stock buyer's view to think it's turning itself into a traditional printing company, well, wrong! The recent fall stock price of TOM has proved my point. Let's take a look at their core business (should be when they filed for listing), it's alomost gone with no content on their site. Sigh!

To be honest, I think TOM.COM will abandon their on-line business and starting to buy traditional media companies in Asia. Everyone in this field is still figuring out how to make money from visitor's pocket. They have to let their customer think buying or renting their on-line product (such as content) at a high price and make they think it's worth the money, then their on-line business will start to generate money. After all, I think it's too late now! Bye and shut down very soon!

As reported in their 2001 annual report, the pay of Mr. Wong Sin is $6.37 million. An increase of 200% from the year before!!!! Overall bonus to staff have also increased 190% from $1.95 millom to $5.68 million...

TOM.COM is getting more value these days besides its portal operation, it's buying traditional media across greater China regions, from China to Taiwan, seemed Li's family want to control 90% of the media in Asia nowadays, must be tired of being property TK. Also Li must have a vision that information can sell because the property in the region is almost dead! Good luck!

TOM.COM hoped to be the online community portal for the greater Chinese community. The site has some slick offerings and interesting features, but it still has failed to capture critical mass and seems unpopular with the very market that its executives hoped to capture: local, young, and upwardly mobile Chinese users. Local users found the site too contrived and corporate for their taste.

IN THE HEADY DAYS of the internet bubble, people insisted that life at "internet speed" was different. You did not have to know where the profits were coming from so long as the traffic was climbing. Seizing the opportunity was more important than the appraisal of business risk. This is exactly what happened to Superman Li's portal!

Although Tom (include all companies they buy) has revenue now, the HK portal is still have not any business model. Furthermore, the content, attractiveness and popularity of website is low, all statistics are badder than hongkong.com, sina.com and yahoo. The management find that HK portal has not any supporting reason to keep it on. If the website cannot improve before January, it probably will close. The domain will redirect to china protal.

Tom.com is quietly transforming itself into a cross-media, Greater China company. They're buying up outdoor advertising space all over China. For Tom, they are still struggling I am sure. The increase in revenue is a reuslt of booking of the revenue from the acquired companies. The key test is : is there any synergy generated from the acquisition? Will the acquisition and the so called 'cross media' strategy really bring value added. That is yet to be seen. Btw, their CFO had resigned!

I really won't visit this site anymore, it has too many Java script errors and abusive pop up windows made me crazy! There is absolutely no content compare to hongkong.com, sina or even yahoo. I really wonder how did they spend the millions of dolloar from share holders!!! TOM.COM has NO FUTURE at all! Better close it down and make the good use of the rest funding for charity!

ICPs are a losing business and everyone knows that unless it's as good as yahoo although even yahoo's revenue is declining, just look at their stock price on NASDAQ recently. If one day any of the local ICP trys to ask me for a cent for their content, I will simply go to read newspaper instead. Period!
